The Psalms: The Morning Cry and the God of All the Earth
Following the “Rule of 30,” today’s reading covers Psalms 5, 35, 65, 95, and 125.
- Psalm 5 (The First Voice):
- Historical Meat: A Psalm of David. It was written as a morning prayer, likely to be sung as the morning sacrifice was being prepared in the Tabernacle.
- The Deep Dive: “In the morning, Lord, You hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before You and wait expectantly.” It’s the meat of Expectation. It teaches us that prayer isn’t just “talking to the ceiling”—it’s a transaction where we leave our burdens and wait for His answer.
- Psalm 35 (The Divine Advocate):
- Historical Meat: David is being pursued by people he once treated with kindness. He is asking God to “contend with those who contend with me.”
- The Deep Dive: David asks God to say to his soul, “I am your salvation.” It’s a prayer for Vindication. It reminds us that when we are treated unfairly, we don’t have to be our own lawyer. We can ask the Judge of the Universe to step into the courtroom on our behalf.
- Psalm 65 (The Silence of Praise):
- Historical Meat: A song of celebration for God’s provision in nature, likely written during a time of a great harvest.
- The Deep Dive: It begins with “Praise awaits You, our God, in Zion; to You our vows will be fulfilled.” It describes God “clothing the pastures with flocks” and “covering the valleys with grain.” It’s the meat of Abundance, teaching us that God’s goodness is visible in the physical world around us.
- Psalm 95 (The Rock of Salvation):
- Historical Meat: This Psalm was used as a call to worship for the Jewish festivals.
- The Deep Dive: “Oh come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us make a joyful noise to the Rock of our salvation.” It also contains a stern warning: “Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.” It teaches us that Worship and Obedience are two sides of the same coin.
- Psalm 125 (The Mountains of Protection):
- Historical Meat: A Song of Ascents.
- The Deep Dive: “As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds His people from this time forth and forever.” It’s the meat of Stability. It reminds us that just as the geography of Jerusalem protected the city, God’s presence acts as a spiritual mountain range around our lives.
The Proverb: Practical Wisdom
Proverbs 5 (The Protection of Discretion)
- The Wisdom: Solomon gives a very direct warning about the “strange woman” (the path of immorality). He warns that while her words are “smoother than oil,” her end is “bitter as wormwood.”
- The Takeaway: It’s a call to Marital Faithfulness and personal boundaries. It encourages a man to “drink water from his own cistern”—finding satisfaction in the life and the people God has already given him.
The Key Verse: “For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord, and He ponders all his paths.”
The Discipline:5 Psalms to learn how to get along with God. 1 Proverb to learn how to get along with man.
