Excerpts from chapters below…

Before we can ever change our actions,
there has to be a fundamental shift at the
very core of who we are. Many of us spend
years trying to fix our outward behavior
while completely ignoring the internal
engine driving those choices. We carry
around past hurts, deep-seated
resentments, and heavy burdens that
eventually make us emotionally and
spiritually numb. This numbness is what
the Bible describes as a “heart of stone”—a
state where we become unresponsive to
God’s love and hardened to the life He
actually wants for us…

To fully embrace the new life, we have to
come to terms with a radical concept: the
old version of ourselves cannot simply be
improved; it has to end. Our past mistakes,
our selfish ambitions, and our deep-rooted
habits are not things we can just put a
bandage over. The Christian walk requires
a definitive break from the person we used
to be. It sounds intense, but there is
incredible freedom in realizing that we
don’t have to drag our old baggage into
our new future…

When the old life is buried and the new
heart is beating, a miraculous identity is
formed. You are no longer a “rehabilitated”
version of your past self; you are an
entirely different entity. The world often
wants to define us by our worst mistakes
or our longest struggles, but God defines
us by the finished work of His Son.
Grasping this reality changes everything
about how we view ourselves when we
look in the mirror each morning…

Even though our spirits are entirely made
new the moment we belong to Christ, our
minds and our bodies still have memories.
We have spent years developing habits,
reactions, and coping mechanisms that
belonged to our old life. Because of this,
living as a new creation requires daily,
intentional participation on our part. It is
a very practical, everyday process of
aligning our outward behavior with our
new inward reality…

The fuel for this renewal is “knowledge”—
specifically, the intimate knowledge of
God. The more time we spend with Him
in prayer, reading His Word, and
experiencing His presence, the more our
minds are transformed. As we gaze at the
Creator, we slowly begin to look more like
the Creator. The old self fades further into
the background, and the image of God
shines brighter and clearer through our
daily lives…
